<encoded>On Tuesday 21 July, 29 IExpE members visited AWE Aldermaston for a networking event designed to strengthen industry connections while providing an insight into AWE’s work.

Following the site security process, attendees were welcomed by the Explosives General Manager, who opened the day with an introduction to AWE. His presentation provided an overview of the organisation, its role in supporting national security and the important work it delivers.

Attendees were then split into two groups to make the most of the activities available. One group took part in a guided bus tour of the AWE site, while the other attended a presentation from Steve Miller on explosive trials conducted by the Explosive Trials Site (XTS) team. Topics included explosive forging, multi-point initiation, shaped charges, slapper detonators and PPE testing.

After lunch, all attendees visited AWE’s Education Collection, affectionately known as “The Museum”. The tour explored Britain’s development of atomic weapons, from the first ‘Blue Danube’ through to Trident, including a number of other systems and the infamous ‘Blue Peacock’, also known as the ‘Chicken Bomb’.

The event was a great success, giving members a valuable insight into AWE’s work while providing an opportunity to strengthen connections across the explosives engineering community. IExpE would like to thank everyone at AWE for their warm hospitality and for delivering such an informative and engaging day.

<encoded>Following a recent IExpE Learn and Connect session, the speaker shared their thoughts on the experience and encouraged other members to get involved:

“I thoroughly enjoyed taking part in this. I hope those who joined found the session useful, and thank you so much for joining in. I’d highly recommend you put yourself forward as volunteers to share your experiences in the Institute of Explosives Engineers (IExpE UK) ‘Learn and Connect’ sessions. There’s a lot to be gained if we can work together as a community and learn from each other.”

The Learn and Connect initiative is designed to encourage knowledge sharing and peer-to-peer learning across the explosives industry, helping to make continuous professional development (CPD) more accessible to the wider community.

The aim is to remove barriers to accessing CPD materials, raise baseline awareness across the sector, foster an open culture of knowledge exchange and build a growing repository of sessions on the IExpE website for members to access at their leisure.

With sessions delivered by industry professionals sharing their own knowledge and experience, Learn and Connect provides an opportunity for members to learn from one another while contributing to the professional development of the wider industry.

Members are encouraged to consider volunteering to deliver a future session and share their expertise with the IExpE community.

<encoded>On 20th June 2026, the Institute of Explosives Engineers (IExpE) welcomed members to its annual Members Weekend at the historic De Vere Beaumont Estate in Windsor.

The weekend brought members together for a relaxed mix of networking, professional activities and social events, with plenty of opportunities to catch up with colleagues and make new connections.

The event began with a welcome from IExpE President Martyn Sime, followed by a lively quiz covering everything from general knowledge and music to animals and celebrities. Congratulations to the winning team, who achieved an impressive 99 out of 109 points!

Members then headed outside for an explosives detection dog demonstration organised by RFA Security Services. Rocket and Arnie demonstrated an Odour Identification Test and vehicle search, giving attendees an insight into how detection dogs are trained and used in operational environments.

After lunch, RAF personnel delivered a fascinating presentation on the Paveway IV precision-guided munition, highlighting the specialist training, preparation and strict safety procedures involved in handling military ordnance.

The afternoon took a more relaxed turn with a gin masterclass from Six O’Clock Gin. Members learned about the history of gin, distillation, botanicals and tonic pairings while sampling a selection of products.

The day finished with a drink’s reception, three-course dinner and musical bingo, followed by a DJ and disco. With plenty of singing, laughter and friendly competition, it was a fitting end to a memorable day.

IExpE would like to thank everyone who attended and helped make the 2026 Members Weekend such a success. The continued support and participation of members is greatly valued and remains an important part of the Institute’s strong community.

<encoded>On 6th November 2025, AWE hosted its first event with the Women in Explosives group, part of the Institute of Explosive Engineers (IExpE). The group aims to improve experiences for women in the explosives industry, build a supportive network and drive positive change in recruitment and retention.

The event brought together women and male allies from across the commercial and defence explosives sectors, with representatives from BAE Systems, DE&S, QinetiQ, DSTL, HSE, Roxel, Ramora, Cranfield University, IExpE and AWE.

The day featured discussions on diversity, maternity leave and returning to work. Emma Willes, Operations Manager at Ramora and Chair of Women in Explosives, led a discussion on improving support for women, including phased returns, tailored support and greater engagement from senior leaders.

A panel of five AWE women leaders also shared their career journeys, achievements and experiences in a traditionally male-dominated industry, offering advice and inspiration to those entering the sector.

Attendees then toured AWE’s historical collection and explosive facilities across TT&EBU and XBU, before hearing a keynote from Nicola Roberts, “A Career in Explosives – A Woman’s Perspective.” Nicola reflected on her career as an Ammunition Technical Officer, Explosive Ordnance Disposal troop member, Major, Squadron Leader and Inspector of Explosives, highlighting resilience, leadership and the importance of challenging stereotypes.

The next step for the group is to turn the issues raised into tangible action across the explosives sector.

AWE thanks everyone who contributed to the event and supported the women in explosives poster display.

To learn more about Women in Explosives, professional registration, membership or upcoming events, get in touch and be part of the movement.

<encoded>From 1 September 2026, CSCS Cards Ltd will begin issuing Institute of Explosives Engineers (IExpE) Certification Scheme cards in partnership with IExpE.

The change will see existing IExpE cards replaced by CSCS cards aligned with IExpE membership and qualification requirements. The application and membership process through IExpE will remain unchanged.

What’s changing?

Under the new scheme:

IExpE cards will be replaced by CSCS cards.

Members will receive one card valid for three years, replacing the previous three separate one-year cards.

Cards will remain subject to current IExpE membership. If membership is not renewed during the three-year card validity period, the card will be revoked.

Future renewals and replacement cards will be issued by CSCS, but applications will continue to be made directly through IExpE.

New digital features

The move to CSCS cards will introduce additional functionality for card verification and digital access.

The new cards will be NFC-enabled, allowing on-site checks using CSCS Smart Check. Cardholders will also have access to the My CSCS app, including the My Skills feature and a digital card with a dynamic QR code for site access.

The My Skills feature acts as a Digital Skills Passport, allowing users to record additional skills, qualifications and training, as well as build a shareable CV-style résumé.

What does this mean for current cardholders?

Existing cardholders will receive a replacement card featuring the new design by 15th September 2026.

The transition is intended to provide members with a longer-lasting card alongside enhanced digital functionality, while maintaining the existing IExpE application and membership process.

For further information or questions about the changes, please contact IExpE at info@iexpe.org.
